Future of Ethics and Professional Responsibility:
How platform business models are disrupting the delivery of legal services
NC State Bar Approved for 1.0 hours of ethics/professionalism
Certificates of completion available for self-reporting to other states
This CLE program begins with a discussion of technology-driven platform business models and how they are disrupting industries from retail to travel, and even legal. Avvo is the largest online legal marketplace connecting consumers with lawyers and has received $132 million in funding to date. The program will look at Avvo and other online platforms changing the delivery of legal services.
We will also examine the ethical issues raised by Avvo Legal Services, a product line developed by Avvo that connects legal consumers with a specific legal need to lawyers who are ready to meet that need at a fixed fee. We will look at recent advisory opinions issued in other states discussing potential ethical pitfalls related to impermissible fee sharing, protecting client property, and client confidentiality.
Finally, we will look at what lawyers can learn from Avvo and other online service providers as they shape their practices for future success.
***Last updated March 2017. Since March, other states, including New York, have issued ethics opinions on Avvo Legal Services.
